What is this app?

Adriatic Fishing Forecast is a free tool for shore anglers fishing along the Adriatic and Ionian coastlines of Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, and Greece. We analyze weather, marine conditions, moon phases, and astronomical data to calculate optimal fishing windows for the next 14 days at each location.

Our scoring algorithm considers wind speed, wave conditions, barometric pressure trends, moon phases, and dawn/dusk feeding patterns to give you a comprehensive 1-10 fishing score for each day and hour.

Covered locations

40 locations across 4 countries, each with a 14-day forecast and hourly scores.

How does the scoring work?

Our advanced scoring algorithm evaluates each hour using six key factors with both weighted scoring and dynamic multipliers:

Base Weights:

  • Dawn/Dusk (20%): Peak feeding occurs near sunrise and sunset
  • Solunar Periods (20%): Major feeding times based on moon position
  • Wind (20%): Light breezes (5-15 km/h) score highest
  • Waves (20%): Ideal chop (0.3-1.2m) creates the best conditions
  • Moon Phase (10%): New and full moons boost fish activity
  • Pressure Trend (10%): Slowly falling pressure indicates feeding activity

Critical Conditions Penalties:

  • Strong Wind (>30 km/h): -70% score penalty (nearly unfishable)
  • High Waves (>2.0m): -60% score penalty (dangerous conditions)
  • Additional penalties apply at lower thresholds (20+ km/h wind, 1.2m+ waves)

Peak Condition Bonuses:

  • 🌅 Golden Hour (+25%): When dawn/dusk overlaps with solunar periods
  • ⚡ Perfect Conditions (+20%): Ideal wind + waves + falling pressure together
  • 🐟 Biological Peak (+15%): Strong dawn/dusk AND solunar scores (both 9+)

Daily Score Calculation:

Instead of simple averaging, we use a weighted approach:

  • Top 4 hours (peak times): 60% weight
  • Overall day average: 40% weight
  • Consistency bonus: +5% if peak hours have low variance
  • Instability penalty: -10% if more than 1/3 of hours are poor (<4)

This better represents fishing reality - anglers target the best times, not fish all day.

Score ratings

9-10 Excellent - Rare! Prime conditions with multiple bonuses
8 Good - Very favorable, strong recommendation
6-7 Fair - Decent conditions, worth a trip
5 Below Average - Some limitations, pick your windows
4 Poor - Challenging, target best windows only
1-3 Very Poor - Difficult or dangerous, consider postponing

Note: The improved algorithm creates better score distribution. Most days will score 4-7. Scores of 8+ indicate truly exceptional conditions and should be prioritized. Scores below 4 suggest significant challenges.

Data sources

We use the following free, open-source APIs:

  • Open-Meteo Forecast API - Weather data including temperature, wind, cloud cover, pressure, and precipitation
  • Open-Meteo Marine API - Wave height, wave period, swell, and sea temperature
  • Astronomical calculations - Moon phase and illumination computed locally using synodic month approximations

Update schedule

Forecasts are automatically refreshed every 6 hours from Open-Meteo's latest data. The last update time is displayed on each forecast page.

⚠️ Important disclaimer

This tool provides guidance only. Fishing success depends on many factors including local knowledge, fish migration patterns, bait selection, and technique. Always check current local conditions and weather warnings before heading out. Safety first!
